Carrots are strongly antiseptic. They are said to be
mentally invigorating and nerve restoring.
They have the reputation of being very indigestible on
account of the fact that they are generally boiled, not
steamed. When used medicinally it is best to take the fresh,
raw juice. This is easily obtained by grating the carrot
finely on a common penny bread grater, and straining and
pressing the pulp thus obtained.
Raw carrot juice, or a raw carrot eaten fasting, will expel
worms. The cooked carrot is useless for this purpose.
A poultice of fresh carrot pulp will heal ulcers.
Fresh carrot juice is also good for consumptives on account of
the large amount of sugar it contains.
Carrots are very good for gouty subjects and for derangements
of the liver.

• Prevention of cardiovascular disease
A study conducted at the Wolfson Gastrointestinal Laboratory
in Edinburgh, Scotland aimed primarily toward finding out the
therapeutic value of carrots revealed that the cholesterol
level was reduced by an astounding 11% when seven ounces of
fresh carrots was consumed every day for three weeks. As you
are very much aware, high cholesterol is a major risk for
cardiovascular diseases, making regular dietary intake of
carrots very valuable in the prevention of heart-related
problems. Carrots are root vegetables and apparently, root
vegetables are able to reduce the risk of a heart attack, based
on the discovery of a group of Swedish scientists. Another
study conducted in Italy at the Mario Negri Institute of
Pharmacological Research discovered that people who consumed
more carrots had about a third of the risk for heart attack
than those who ate less.
• Cancer prevention
Consumption of beta-carotene like those in carrots has shown
a strong connection with the reduction of cancer risk,
specifically lung cancer. In fact, a study conducted by a group
of British researchers revealed that increasing beta-carotene
intake from 1.7 to 2.7 mg per day greatly reduced the risk of
lung cancer by more than 40%. On average, carrots contain
roughly 3 mg of beta-carotene, giving you enough to combat
cancer. Researchers also found that the risk of having colon
cancer was also reduced by about 24% when carrots, which are
rich in fiber, are taken as part of the daily diet. In another
study, this time on a group of women, it showed that women who
ate fresh carrots were about 8 times less probable to develop
cancer of the breast compared to those who did not eat it.
• Macular degeneration
Macular degeneration is a common eye disease among the
elderly. Several researches show that consuming lots of
beta-carotene had as much 40% less risk for it than those who
don’t eat as much.
• Eyesight maintenance
Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness. Carrots are
rich in this vitamin and are therefore valuable in keeping your
eyesight healthy.
• Stroke
It is not only apples that you have to eat on a daily basis.
Eating a carrot a day is known to reduce the risk for stroke by
as much as 68%. Many studies have also reinforced the so-called
carrot effect on the brain where stroke patients with high
levels of beta carotene had the highest survival rate.
• Diabetes control
Carrots can also help with the regulation of blood sugar
levels because it contains carotenoids. This has an inverted
effect on insulin resistance, making it effective in lowering
blood sugar levels.
Aside from the mentioned benefits above, carrots also have
antiseptic properties, making it efficient as a vermicide or a
laxative. It can also serve as remedy for certain liver
conditions. The oil from the carrot is beneficial for those
with dry skin by making it softer and smoother. Carrot juice
can also be taken to improve the condition of the stomach and
the rest of the gastrointestinal system.
